Please join us for the opening reception of “Diaphanous” at Sidle House Gallery on August 29th, 4-8pm
In our group show, we each explore self-portraiture through our distinct mediums: Aidan Fraser in ceramics, Nat Nelson in photography, and I in painting (with a touch of sculpture and installation). Using tulle as a unifying motif, we each delved into themes of body, perception, and selfhood within today’s cultural context. Through this collaboration, we aimed to braid our personal stories into a shared narrative about the feminine form, creating a space of solace, understanding, and joyful resistance.
Funded by a 2024 Artist Springboard Grant from the Maine Arts Commission, my contributions to our exhibition feature 14 life-size representations of myself across 6 large self-portraits. Articulated through the universal ritual of undressing, I address themes of chronic illness, control, and release, exploring the internal dialogue of multiple selves as they navigate the complexities of body image, fertility, and societal expectations.
